The east
coast of KZN is considered one of the top ten destinations in the
world for scuba diving. With warm subtropical waters, both Sodwana
Bay to the north of Durban, and Aliwal Shoal to the south, make for
great diving all year round.
ALIWAL
SHOAL
The majestic
Aliwal Shoal offers great reef diving with an abundance of fish and
coral life. There are also two wrecks in the area that make
fascinating dive sites. From June to December the Aliwal Shoal
becomes home to the Ragged-Tooth Shark, which use the area as their
mating ground. This is a season not to be missed and sightings can
almost be guaranteed over this period.
SODWANA
Situated
on the Maputoland coast in the heart of the wilds of Africa, Sodwana
Bay is a haven for avid scuba divers. Sodwana is a marine reserve
and home to a recently discovered colony of Coelacanths, once
thought to be extinct. With brilliant reefs and colourful marine
life, one can enjoy many dive sites including the famous 7 and 9
Mile reefs.
It is also
common during our summer months, from September to April, to come
across the gentle giants of the sea in these waters, the Whale
Shark. One can also watch Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles making
their annual trek up the beach to lay their eggs (Nov – Feb).
SARDINE
RUN - WILDLIFE EXTRAVAGANZA
The
migration of the pilchard Sardinops Sagox is an annual
marine phenomenon that occurs off the Transkei and KZN coasts from
mid-May to July. This event, which must be witnessed first-hand,
brings with it millions of small sardines, the beautiful Orca Whale
and everything in between.
If it’s
your dream to see thousands of dolphins, birds, sharks, seals and
whales, all in close proximity, then this is for you. It is truly a
wonderful marine wildlife opportunity to get up-close and personal
with nature, is a trip for the whole family and a brilliant
photographic opportunity.
