The new tar road is between Hluhluwe and the lower Mkuzi bridge. This detour will save you about 60km of dirt road travel, but will add an extra 75km to your journey.
It is about 116km from Pongola to Hluhluwe. The new bridge over the Lower Mkuzi is now open. They are continuing to tar the road towards Mbazwana. While they are doing this, the detours can get very muddy in wet conditions. There is approximately 6km of dirt road left to tar.
